A fourth grade teacher (me) posing in a classroom, ready to take on student behavior.

Last updated on November 13th, 2023 at 04:47 pm

Managing a new class’ behavior can be the toughest part of substitute teaching.

(And then doing it over and over again in brand new classrooms.)

After a few years of subbing, I gathered my favorite tips and tricks– my survival tactics, if you will. This site is covered in my stories, my successes and unfortunate mistakes. I’ve included detailed guides on behavior management specifically, laying out the collection of behavior strategies I draw from each time I step foot in a new classroom.

I encourage you to browse those articles– maybe even grab a drink and get cozy as you may begin reading and thinking “I’m glad I’m not the only one….”

But sometimes we need a super-quick guide. A fast source of help or inspiration.

As substitutes, especially, we cut our teeth on quick. So I’ve drawn up a printable that can help with just that.

Don’t worry, don’t sweat! I got you!

This guide should serve as a base from which to jump. It covers the main points from which I’ve diverged into detail on separate blog posts. But still, at a glance, there’s much to be gleaned. I’ve included links for help in specific topics. It should be noted that the tips covered in this document are based on my experiences alone— you should follow your school or district’s protocol.

I hope this guide can serve as a useful starting point in managing classroom behavior. Good luck, fellow subs!

Here is what the guide looks like. The PDF that can be downloaded and printed can be found using the button below.

  1. This design is incredible! You obviously know how to keep a reader entertained.

Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Excellent
job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it.
    Too cool!
